Blue Dolphins of the Earth

They capture me, pull me in to the center of their blue-green-gray flesh and hold me like dolphin fins wrapped around my body. Living statues unfolding out of the earth, growing so slowly that they trick our perception of time. Life sustenance in those swords of dolphin-flesh leaves surrender to their tall spike reaching up to the sun and to which they sacrifice themselves for the next generation. Then wither and die. Those magnificent thick blue-gray leaves exhaust themselves after decades of perseverance, thinning to brown paper, crumble and return to the barren waste that lays under them.

These are the stately agave of Big Bend Chisos Mountains.
I belong to them.
